« Indigenous wealth ? Competing views about the size, population and values of Indigenous land interests in Australia »

Since the passage of the first land rights laws in South Australia in 1966 and the Mabo judicial revolution in 1992 and subsequent Native Title Act in 1993, corporate Indigenous ownership, jurisdictional authority and influence over land has rapidly expanded. Yet there have been competing views about the implications of this new found Indigenous wealth for Australian and Indigenous development. In this exploratory seminar we combine the latest available information on land tenure, population and resources using GIS to generate some questions for consideration not just about rights and interests in land, but about the transformative potentiality of land tenure changes over the past 40 years for diverse Indigenous economic futures.

Jon Altman is a research professor in anthropology/economics at the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research (CAEPR) at the Australian National University, Canberra ; from 1990-2010 he was Foundation Director of CAEPR and he is currently an Australian Research Council Professorial Research Fellow focusing his research on economic hybridity and alternate economic possibilities in remote Australia. He is a fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and among his recent publications is a book People on Country, Vital Landscapes, Indigenous Futures (co-edited with Sean Kerins, Federation Press, Sydney) released in October 2012. Since moving to Australia in 1976 Professor Altman has focused much of his research on development issues in remote Australia undertaking most of his fieldwork in western Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.
